World Environment Day – June 05, 2018

World Environment Day was celebrated on 5th June 2018 jointly by IEI KLC and the Student Chapter of Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor, Alleppey. The theme of the celebration was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. Later a seminar was held on the topic “Environmental Challenges-ways to connect with nature”.

The function was chaired by Dr.S.Suresh Babu, Principal, SBCE. Dr.Manoj Narayanan (HOD, BT&BCE) welcomed the gathering. He explained the need of a healthy and stable environment for the survival of living organisms in particular and Mother Earth in general. In the presidential address Dr.S.Suresh Babu highlighted the pollution caused by plastics and suggested to reduce use of plastics. He explained the health hazards of plastics in detail.

Prof. Dr. Thankamony (Retd) Department of of Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET) was the guest of honour and she inaugurated the function. She advised the young generation to cultivate a culture that minimize use of plastics. She advocated the slogan the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) to protect environment.

Er.K.Sivadasan. (Honorable Secretary, IEI, KLC) felicitated the function. He highlighted the need to bring down greenhouse gas emission. He observed the natural phenomena of cyclic variation of carbon pollution. For the last 800000 years carbon pollution oscillates between 300 ppm and 175 ppm in an interval of 100000 years (appx).  60 years back it was 315 ppm. It passed the safe level of 350 ppm and now it is 411.5 ppm and moving towards the dangerous level of 450 ppm. It is time to think seriously to stop the rise and to bring it down to safe level. Scientists are hard at work to find ways for carbon capture in a big way. He appreciated students of SBCE for their initiative of bottle gardening which promote the twin target, reuse of plastics and carbon capture.

Mr.Madhav K, College coordinator of IEI Student Chapters felicitated the function. He cited the recently reported sad episode of a pilot whale which was struggling for breath and swim in aa Thai canal. The whale vomited plastic bags during rescue attempts. It is a clear indication of plastic pollution that threaten life on earth.

Dr.Thanamony enumerated in detail the simple ways to protect environment. She called upon students and faculties to take the lead to create awareness among the people on plastic pollution and to put into practice the slogan ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.’

Ms.Shamnamol G K proposed vote of thanks.
