Invited for a talk on the topic Synergism between plant extracts and antibiotics against MRSA to Sree Narayana Ayurveda Medical college, Puthoor, Kerala on 31st of July 2014 in connection with their decennial celebrationIndustry – Institute interaction (Research project)A Collaborative Research Project between Sree Buddha College of Engineering and Oushadhi, a Government of Kerala Undertaking, Trissur.Oushadi, a Govt. of Kerala Undertaking, the largest producer of Ayurvedic Medicine in the public sector in India and the Centre for Biotechnology and Nanotechnology, Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor, Alappuzha, signed a MoU on standardization and cost effective production by optimizing manufacturing process of Arishtas and Asavas, two groups of Ayurvedic Medicines. The study on Bioactive fraction of Woodfordia Fruticosa( Linn) Kurz (Thathiripoo) and its role in optimization of ayurvedic fermentation process was funded by the Department of Ayush, Govt.of India through the National Medicinal Plants Board. The sanctioned amount of the project was Rs.22.00 lakhs. The project was completed on 31st January 2014.The project was identified and initiated by Prof. V K Sasikumar Ex-HOD and also the present HOD and was carried out and completed by Dr.Seema P Nair, Former HOD, Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering. The project coordinator in Oushadi was Dr. Sheela Karalam. Collaboration with Foreign UniversitiesThe Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering has collaboration with Bioprocess Technology Division of the School of Industrial Technology, University Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. An MoU was signed with USM for joint investigations on probiotics and health related researches and also joint participation in the exchange of staff and post graduate students.Dr. Min Tze Liong, from USM was appointed as Adjunct Professor of Sree Buddha College of Engineering. Dr.Seema Nair, former HOD was invited to deliver a lecture in USM. Two M Tech (Molecular Medicine) students did their research projects in USM. Research on Genetic Profiling of Nontribal Kerala PopulationThe department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering undertook a study on the origin of the Ezhava population of Kerala. Historians point out the Negrito or Dravidian origin for all Keralites. The aim of the research study was to provide sufficient scientific evidence based on Y- chromosome, Short Tandem Repeat(Y-STR) analysis for tracing the paternal lineage.Prof. K Sasikumar, Chairman, Sree Buddha Educational Society, Kollam was responsible for initiating the problem. The study was conducted by Dr. Seema Nair, Principal Investigator and former HOD, BT&BCE and Dr. V V Pillay, Professor of Analytical Toxicology and Forensic Biotechnology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. The study revealed that the nontribal population of Kerala has proximity with European and East-Asian population. The Kerala population has phenotype resemblance to the European Swedish population and to Eastern Asian population of Taiwan, Thailand and China (Zhuarg). It further clarifies that the Ezhavas were genetically more similar to the Europeans (60%) than to the East Asian (40%)LIST OF PUBLICATIONS S.
