B.TECH (FOOD TECHNOLOGY)

A new UG program on Food Technology is proposed under the Department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering.

About the Program

The country has come a long way in food security through green revolution and other scientific interventions. Food technology has been identified by Government of India as sun rise sector due to its rapid growth, immense growth potential and its contribution to the development of the country as a whole. To cater to the needs of qualified trained manpower with necessary professional skills in food industry, food technology course would essentially incorporate aspiring students with the basic know-how of food chemistry, engineering properties of biological materials and food biotechnology, diary technology, unit operations, modelling and simulation of food processing, food product design and development, bioprocess engineering, food toxicity evaluation, food process equipment and design, automation in food processing and food related entrepreneurial skill development. The Food Technology department is equipped with laboratories with adequate workspace and sample preparation areas. The laboratories cater facilities to the students to perform food toxicity analysis, evaluation of the nutritive value of food products in terms of mycotoxins, pesticides and toxic residues, heat and mass transfer operations in food samples, development of food packaging materials etc.

Relevance and Opportunities

Current trends indicate that food processing industries will generate huge employment opportunities for graduates in Government as well as in Private sectors. The growing trend in food trade and the growth of Indian food industry has attracted significant importance to food technology and Engineering. The food technology industry in India is rapidly developing, especially with the advent of packaged food, door to door food delivery services like Swiggy and Zomato. The Food Technology program offers students to get placed in FCI, FSSAI, various food industries across the country and abroad. A few private sector recruiters include Britannia, Tasty Foods, Perfetti, Pepsi, Synthite, Aachi Masala, Eastern Condiments Pvt. Ltd etc. The program will also help the Food Technology engineers in the improvement in advanced automation in food processing and food related entrepreneurial skill development in near future.
