A Questionnaire survey and water quality testing was conducted by the final year students of Department of Civil Engineering in Pattoor panchayat ward 4 on 24/11/23 as part of the Jala shudhi mission in association with the ASCE Students Chapter

SEMINAR ON “SCOPE OF ENGINEERING GRADUATES IN THE TECHNO-MANAGEMENT SECTOR”

Date of the event: 16th February 2023

Venue: SDPK Hall

A seminar session was organized by Department of Civil Engineering in association with ASCE on the topic “Scope of Engineering Graduates in the Techno-Management Sector” on February 16, 2023 at 11:40 am. Dr. R Sathish Kumar, Professor and Dean, School of Construction and Technology, NICMAR, Hyderabad and Mr. Vishnu Namboodiri. V, Assistant Professor, NICMAR were the speakers. The session was attended by nearly 50 students of eighth semester.
Ms. Neethu Roy, Assistant Professor, welcomed the gathering. Dr. R.Sathish explained about the digitization of construction and its evolving concept. The session went on to be more informative as he continued to talk about the advanced construction technology and management and its techno- managerial jobs. Later on, Mr. Vishnu Namboodiri handled the session. He discussed about the modern construction softwares and career opportunities for graduates in the construction management sector. The session ended by 12.30 pm. The seminar was very effective for the students.

WORKSHOP ON “MIX DESIGN”

Date of the event: 14th February 2023

Venue: SDPK Hall

Department Civil Engineering in association with ASCE organized a one-day workshop on Mix Design on February 14, 2023. Dr. Ramaswamy K P, Assistant Professor in Civil department, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam was the guest speaker. The workshop was attended by nearly 60 students including PG and eighth semester students in the presence of Dr. Gouri Antherjanam (HOD).
Ms. Shobha Elizabeth Thomas, PG coordinator, welcomed the gathering. The workshop focused on designing the mix of normal and self-compacting concrete using the latest IS codes. The speaker also talked about the mix design of fiber reinforced concrete. The workshop also provided the students to design the mix and an experience of practically making the mix in concrete lab. The speaker also extended his willingness to help the students to clear the queries. The students were so fortunate to hear from the resource person. The session ended by 4.15 pm.

WEBINAR ON SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION AND ITS NEED

ASCE in association with IIC has conducted a webinar on the topic “Sustainable construction and its needs” on 17th jan 2023 through Google meet online platform. The session was inaugurated by Dr. Gouri Antherjanam , HoD, Department of Civil Engineering. The resource person was Dr. R.Siva Chidambaram, senior scientist CSIR Roorkee. The webinar talked about sustainability in construction with reference to precast members and its applications. The Session started by 10am. PG students and faculties attended the programme. The session ended by 11am.

EXPERT TALK ON CERTIFIED BUILDING PERMIT

Venue: CE Seminar Hall

ASCE in association with IIC has conducted an expert talk on the topic “certified Building Permit”. The session was inaugurated by Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, HoD Department of Civil Engineering. The session started by 2:00pm and was handled by Er. Sooraj S, CEO Sooraj Builders, Licensed Civil Engineer. He gave a detailed talk about certified building permit, Empanelled Licensing, Kerala Building Rules, Sanketham, Kerala Muncipal and panchayath Building Rule, Kerala Building rules Amendments 2021. He also gave insight about intelligent building plan management system (IBPMS).Pg students attended the programme. The session ended by 4:00pm.

SEMINAR SERIES
RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

A seminar series has been planned by the Department of Civil Engineering under the leadership of Assistant Professor and UG Co-ordinator, Prof. Ashok Mathew. In view of which the first seminar was conducted on 16-12-2022, under the theme Recent Advancements in Civil Engineering which was inaugurated by Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, Head of the Department. She delivered her speech about the need of the seminar series and how it helps in updating knowledge. The panel included Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, Prof. Ashok Mathew, Prof. Cinaya Tony and Prof. Kailas G Nath. Twenty students from eighth semester presented their topics and students of fifth semester and eighth semester attended the seminar. The best paper was selected according to the marks distributed and Rehna S was awarded the best paper certificate by Dr. Gouri Antherjanam. The session ended by 4:00pm.

WEBSITE AND LOGO LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY 2023 (IC-SPET’23)

Website and logo launch of IC – SPET’23 was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with ASCE on December 12, 2022 from 12.45 pm to 1.10 pm at the Skill development centre. The programme was presided by Dr Gouri Antherjanam (HOD). In her welcome speech, she explained the significance and need of the International Conference on Sustainable Practices in Engineering and Technology (IC – SPET). The logo and website were launched by Dr Saji Varghese, Principal of Sree Buddha College of Engineering. Dr Sivasankar S, PG Dean, delivered the vote of thanks. Results of the logo designing competition conducted on 24 nov 2022 was announced. Abhisanth santhosh of 2nd year PG received the certificate for designing the best logo for IC-SPET’23. The certificates were awarded by the principal to the winner and the participants. The programme ended by 1.10 pm.

RECENT TRENDS IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

Under the seminar series a seminar was conducted on 25-11-2022, under the theme Recent Trends in Structural Engineering which was inaugurated by Dr.GouriAntherjanam, Head of the Department. The panel included Dr.GouriAntherjanam, Prof. Shobha Elizabeth Thomas, and Prof.Anusree Lal. Twenty Three students presented their topics. The best paper was selected according to the marks distributed and Pooja Rajendran was awarded the best paper certificate by Dr.GouriAntherjanam. The session ended by 4:15pm.

LOGO COMPETITION FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY 2023 (IC-SPET’23)

A logo design competition for IC – SPET’23 was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with ASCE. The event was announced on 16 November 22. Students were advised to send their logo to the official mail id of ASCE student chapter. The logo is selected on the basis of simplicity, visual pleasing and versatility.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

 ASCE along with NSS units 217 and 627 of Sree Buddha College of Engineering Pattoor in association with Blood Donors Kerala, Pathanamthitta conducted a Blood Donation Camp on 27th October, 2022 at Ashoka Auditorium of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor from 09 am to 2 pm. The camp began by explaining the importance on blood donation and some guidance for donation by the resource person. Through proper medical checkups under strict supervision, students had donated 3 5 units of blood with immense happiness and it became helpful to two outsiders in need, through the acknowledgment of the camp.

INAUGURAL CEREMONY OF ASCE STUDENT CHAPTER INITIATION

ASCE Student Chapter inauguration was held on Tuesday, 18th October. The chief guest of the program was Dr. B Sunil Kumar, Director, Indian Institute of Infrastructure and construction (IIIC). Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, HoD, CE, SBCE welcomed the gathering. Dr. Kishore P, Chapter advisor delivered felicitation for the program. Dr Gouri Antherjanam (HoD, CE, SBCE), Ms. Anusree Lal and Mr. Suraj S (Faculty coordinators), Student committee members, UG & PG students were present for the inaugural function. Dr. B Sunil Kumar inaugurated the initiation of the ASCE chapter and appreciated the efforts taken by the coordinators in his inaugural address and he also took a session on tips for overall professional growth of a Civil Engineer. The report of ASCE student chapter of academic year 2021-2022 was presented by Mr. Adersh S Kumar, S7 CE, President, ASCE, SBCE. WEBINAR ON “GATE ORIENTATION 2023”

Summary

A webinar Session was organized by the Department Civil Engineering in association with ASCE on the topic “Gate orientation 2023” on September 24,2022 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm through online platform, Google meet. The session was delivered by the alumni student of 2016-20 batch, Mr. Adarsh P, M-tech, IIT Madras and Ms. Akhila raj, M- tech, NITK Suratkal (AIR: 8019). Dr. Gouri Antherjanam , HOD, Department of Civil welcomed the gathering. The programme was attended by nearly 65 participants including Dr. Gouri Antherjanam (HOD), Teaching faculty and undergraduate students of Sree Buddha College Engineering.
Mr. Adarsh P explained his journey to enter into the prestigious institution IIT Madras and the preparation stratergy that helped to crack the gate exam 2022. The session went on to be more informative as Ms. Akhila Raj continued to talk more about the exam pattern and opportunities of gate 2023. The speaker also extended their willingness to help the students to ace the gate exam. The participants were so fortunate to have interactions with our proud aluminis and to clarify their doubts. After the session, live feedbacks were also collected. The session ended by 8:30 pm.

REPORT ONREVIT AND PRIMAVERA WORKSHOP 04-07-2022 TO 6-7-2022

Department of Civil Engineering organized a three day workshop on Civil Engineering softwares such as Revit and Primavera from 4th -6th July 2022. It was coordinated in association with Habilete Learning solutions, Kollam. The Workshop was inaugurated by the Head of the Department Dr. Gouri Antherjanam. CEO of Habilete learning solution Dr. Kishor P. was the resource person. Hands on training were provided on Revit architecture and primavera sofwares. Studnets were also made to design their own by giving live assignments. It was conducted for 65 nos of sixth semester B.Tech students of the department. This workshop helped students to understand the concepts of softwares and gave a good experience to all participants.

REPORT ON World Environment Day celebrations 2022 06-05-2022

As part of WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (June 5) celebrations for this year, Department of Civil Engineering Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor, Alappuzha in association with IEDC, CASTELLOS and ASCE student chapter conducted technical competitions and tree sap planting.  The event aimed at creating awareness on the importance of protection of the environment. As part of the technical event, a poster design, technical quiz and photography competitions were conducted to set students’ creativity ablaze. The theme of all competitions was environmental protection. About 100 students from different branches participated in all events.had participated in this event.

On 5th June 2021, inauguration of the event was conducted at Library block seminar hall by Dr. J. Udayakumar, Associate professor of Geology Department, TKM CE, Kollam by 11.00am. Honorable Principal, Dr. K. Krishnakumar explained about the theme of World Environment Day 2022- ‘One for all’. HoD of Civil Department, SBCE, Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, welcomed the guest. The chief guest delivered an expert talk on protecting our environment focusing on the importance of maintaining a sustainable environment through real life problems from Kerala context. Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, HoD, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, gave a Concluding Remarks and declared the winners of the competitions and cash prizes were distributed. Mr. Anandhu S. Lal, student representative, delivered a vote of thanks to all. The event coordinator Adersh S. Kumar appreciated the participants for their zeal and vitality and mentioned the dedication of the entire team behind the success of the event. Tree sap planting was also done at campus premises by Principal, HoDs and students. Assistant professor Ms. Regi P. Mohan, coordinated the event.

REPORT ON WRITING & PUBLISHING A RESEARCH ARTICLE 19-05-2022

An expert session on “Writing & publishing a research article” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) & ASCE student chapter of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor on 19th May, 2022 at 9:30am The expert talk was delivered by Dr. Adarsh S., Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. Dr. Gouri Antherjanam, Professor and HoD (CE) welcomed the gathering and in her welcome address she emphasized on the importance of publishing a good research paper and the relevance of the session. The webinar mainly focused on the thrust areas such as “why to publish”, “where to publish”, “steps of publication-manuscript preparation”, “review and editorial process”, “publication ethics” etc. He also explained in detail the overall publication process and quality scale of journals, impact factor, journal selection process etc.
The speaker Dr. Adarsh S. who has won prestigious Excellence in Ph.D Research Award instituted by IIT Bombay in 2018; published 52 papers in reputed indexed international journals; over 55 papers in international and national conferences; 2 Book chapters and one book and an active reviewer of many international journals of high reputation was the very right person with immense experience in the area of talk. The participants were so fortunate to have an interaction with such an experienced researcher and to clarify their doubt regarding scientific research publications. More than 40 participants attended the session which included faculty members, research Scholars, P.G scholars and B. Tech final year students from various departments of the college.

REPORT ONONE DAY MIX DESIGN WORKSHOP 09-05-2022

A one day mix design workshop was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on 9th May 2022. Er. Shelly Fernandez, MD of Qcrete ready mix India, Pvt Ltd, Kochi handled the theoretical and laboratory session. The Workshop was inaugurated by the Head of the Department Dr. Gouri Antherjanam. The topics discussed in the theoretical session taken at conference hall, library block were mix design concepts, ingredients of concrete and their properties, design approaches etc. A detailed session was conducted about the initial and final stage hardening properties of concrete, various tests conducted to check qualities of concrete, working of secondary cementitious materials in concrete and types of cement currently available in the market etc. Training was also given on mix design procedure as per IS 10262 – 2019 and finding the properties of fresh concrete. In the AN, it was a practical session conducted at the Concrete lab of the department. The workshop was conducted in association with ASCE student chapter and PGIF. M. Tech Structural Engineering and B.Tech students of the department attended the workshop. It was very informative on concepts of concrete mix design and gave a good experience to all participants. It ended by 4 pm.

AWARENESS ON IMPORTANCE OF GATE EXAM PREPARATION

A webinar was organized by department of Civil Engineering through gmeet in association with Futton learning platform, Kollam on Importance of gate coaching on 27th February 2022 at 7 pm. Head of the Department Dr. Gouri Antherjanam welcomed the audience. The resource person for the webinar was CEO of Futton learning platform. He discussed the importance of qualifying gate exam, job opportunities after gate and scope of doing M. Tech. He also explained the bubble system introduced by their earning app for gate coaching. About 60 participants’ including parents and students of S4 and S6 attended. Session ended at 8.00 pm. It was a very informative session for the participants.

Innovators Premier league 2 (IPL2)

As part of Innovators Premier league 2 (IPL2), Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre along with IIC & Department of Civil Engineering has coorganised a motivational session by successful entrepreneur “My Story” On 22nd November 2022. The session was handled by our M. Tech Structural Engineering Alumnae (2017-2019) Mr. Althaf M., CEO of DArch Architects based at Kollam.

Sree Buddha College of Engineering has signed an MoU with IIIC (Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction) Kollam on 6th April 2022

Sree Buddha College of Engineering has signed an MoU with IIIC (Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction) Kollam on 6th April 2022 in presence of Dr. K Krishnakumar, Principal, SBCE, Pattoor, HoD of Civil Department Dr. Gouri Antherjanam and IIIC director Dr. Sunil Kumar. The features of MoU are:
1.Students who enter fifth semester can enroll for a dual certificate program. They can complete Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Construction Management (PGD ACM) immediately after finishing the eighth semester. Internships, labs and industry visits are included in this hybrid program.
2.Faculty immersion program equips engineering tutors to get an industry exposure along with their already existing academic credentials.
A long term mutually beneficial association IIIC, Kollam is expected through the MoU.

Report on SBCE Conference Series 2022

The inaugural function of 6th Annual Conference Series of Sree Buddha College of Engineering was held at 10.30 AM on 23rd June 2022 in the Conference hall at Library Building of the Sree Buddha College of Engineering (SBCE), Pattoor, Alappuzha. Dr. K. Krishnakumar, Principal, Sree Buddha College of Engineering presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Sivasankar S., P.G. Dean, SBCE warmly welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering to the function.
The conference series was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr. Samson Mathew, Director, of National Transportation Planning & Research Centre (NATPAC) – Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). In the inaugural address, he advised the delegates to explore the opportunities in the field of research and the possibilities to get financial assistance from various funding agencies. Prof V. Prasad, Secretary of Sree Buddha Educational Society offered felicitations and expressed his expectations that the conference series will serve as an effective platform for the faculty members, researchers and students to discuss up on their innovative research ideas. Ms. Aparna B. Lal, P.G. students’ coordinator delivered the vote of thanks.
Under this conference series, SPICE’22, was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, BRIO’22 was conducted together by the department of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering and department of Food Technology, RTACT’22 was conducted by the department of Computer Science, REACT’22 was conducted by the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, ASET’22 was conducted by the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and RAMMTS’22 was conducted by the department of Mechanical Engineering. About 80 papers were presented under this conference series from various universities across the nation.

Introduction to Ocean Engineering & Career prospects
The Dept. Of Civil Engineering organised an online webinar session on ‘Introduction to Ocean Engineering & Career prospects’ on 6th March 2022 at 11 am. The session was conducted as part of #CIVIL VIBES – webinar series on Industry Interaction with Industrial professionals. The session was handled by Mr. Arunjith Avaneendran, Senior Maritime Engineer at Jacobs, Dubai. He is an alumnus of TKMCE and IIT Madras. The session covered coastal, offshore, marine, dredging engineering etc, and the job
opportunities for civil engineerss in these areas as well. Mr. Arunjith also explained about the institutions offering the course ocean engineering and also briefed on companies in this field. Ms. Regi P. Mohan . Asst Professor, Civil department was the coordinator of the session. More than 60 participants attended the webinar including B. Tech and M.Tech students. The session ended by 12.30 pm.

MIX DESIGN WORKSHOP ON HOT WEATHER CONCRETING

A mix design workshop on ‘Hot Weather Concreting’ was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on 17th and 18th February 2022 at the Concrete lab of the department in association with DH Academy. The two-day workshop was inaugurated by Head of the Department Dr. Gouri Antherjanam. The resource person for the workshop was Er. Shyju Nair, CEO of DH Academy. The topics discussed in the workshop were mix design concepts, ingredients of concrete and their properties, design approaches etc. A detailed session was conducted about the initial and final stage hardening properties of concrete, various tests conducted to check qualities of concrete, working of secondary cementitious materials in concrete and types of cement currently available in the market. The training was also given on mix design procedure as per IS 10262 – 2019 and finding the properties of fresh concrete. The coordinators of the workshop were PG Coordinator Dr. S. Sivasankar, and Assistant Professor Ms Anusree Lal. First and second-year M. Tech Structural Engineering students of the department attended the workshop. NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (SPICE’21)
Sustainable Practices in Civil Engineering (SPICE’21) is the 5th National Conference conducted by department of Civil Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor with a focal theme, Sustainability in Civil Engineering. The sub themes were Structural Engineering & Sustainable Construction Technology, Water Resource & Environmental Engineering, Geotechnics and Transportation Engineering, Modelling and Computational Techniques in Civil Engineering and GIS application in Civil Engineering.
The two day national conference was conducted on 10th and 11th June 2021 through Google Meet Online Platform. The paper presentations were evaluated by 9 panels. Dr  E V Nampoothiri, Former HoD (CE), TKMCE, Dr Sajeeb R, Professor, TKMCE and Dr Nivin Philip, Associate Professor, Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam were the expert members in the evaluation panel.
On the first day, 10th June, following the inaugural function, the technical sessions of ‘SPICE’21 were started at 11:30 am through Google meet platform. On the first day, 25 online presentations were evaluated by 5 parallel panels. And remaining 34 presentations were evaluated on the second day, 11th June, by 4 parallel panels. The presentations were over by 4:00pm on 11th June, 2021.
Ms. Sruthi S, PG Student of NSS College of Engineering Palakkad received the Best Paper Award for the paper titled “Fatigue Behaviour of Prestressed Concrete Beam under Cyclic Loading”. The Second Best Paper Award was shared by Dr Uma Chaduvula, Faculty of Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar for the paper titled “Sustainable Use of Fiber Reinforced Expansive Clay in Barrier Systems” and Ms Anju Manohar, PG Student of MES College of Engineering Kuttippuram for the paper titled “Travel Demand Strategies for Congestion Mitigation”.



ONLINE ALUMNI MEET
Date of the event : 1st August, 2020
The department of Civil Engineering has organised an online alumni meet on 1st August 2020 through Google meet. Dr Gouri Antherjanam, HoD, Civil Department delivered the welcome speech. The meet was inaugurated by Shri  K K Sivadasan, the honorable treasurer of SBES and was presided by Principal Dr S Suresh Babu. Dr R Gopakumar, Professor, department of Civil Engineering and Asst Professor Mr Ashok Mathew, felicitated the meeting. Assistant Professor and Alumni coordinator Ms Namitha Chandran, presented the current status of Department. Asst Professor Ms Sreelekshmi S , delivered the vote of thanks.
The alumni interaction was conducted in two sessions. The first session was for 2012 to 2015 passed out batches. There were 100 participants. The second session was for 2016 to 2019 passed out batches. There were 97 participants. HoD Dr Gouri Antherjanam, presented NBA accreditation activities and made the alumni aware of the Vision, Mission and PEOs of the department. The meet was very interactive and the representatives from each batch shared their memories, job experiences and suggestions to improve the trainings given to the forthcoming batches. The suggestions included job oriented trainings, soft skill training and career guidance for students apart from their regular curriculum. They also ensured their support and participation in the future endeavors of the department. The session ended by 8.30 pm.

FDP on ‘Forensics in Civil Engineering’
Date of the event : 27th& 30th July, 2020
The five day online FDP on “Forensics in Civil Engineering” was organized from 27th -30th July & 3rd August, 2020 by the department of Civil Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor in association with IE(I) Kollam local centre and Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Cell (IEDC) SBCE, Pattoor.
The inaugural function of the FDP was on 27th July, 2020 at 9.00 am. Head of the Department Dr Gouri Antherjanam, delivered the welcome address and Dr N Ganesan, Professor, NIT, Calicut inaugurated the programme. Er K Sivadasan, Hon. Chairman of IE(I), Kollam Local Chapter gave felicitation and Prof Ashok Mathew, Asst Professor, SBCE, Pattoor proposed the vote of thanks.
Following the inaugural function expert talks on various aspects of Forensics in Civil Engineering were taken in 9 sessions on five days. The structure of the programme was arranged such that it will be beneficial to the wide range of participants. An average of 80 active participants which included faculty from various engineering colleges and polytechnic colleges, practicing engineers from government and private sector, research scholars and PG scholars attended the sessions.
From the experience of the renowned speakers detailed sessions were taken about Principles of Forensic Engineering & Non Destructive Testing (NDT), various equipment that can be used for forensic investigation, different aspects of structural forensic investigation and geotechnical forensic investigation based on case studies, causes and remedies for corrosion in structures, report generation of these investigations, legal aspects and about a novel technology; X-ray computed microtomography. The feedback from participants after every session clearly indicated the well acceptance of the programme.
The FDP ended with a valedictory function held on 3rd August, 2020. The function was presided over by Dr S Suresh Babu, Principal, Sree Buddha College of Engineering. Dr Gouri Antherjanam, HoD (CE), Sree Buddha College of Engineering delivered the welcome address and Ms Shobha Elizabeth Thomas, Asst Professor, SBCE, Pattor presented a brief report of the FDP.  CASTELLOS INAUGURATION REPORT 2019-20

The civil engineering association “CASTELLOS” for the academic year 2019-20 was inaugurated on 21st October 2019 at library conference hall. Presided over by the principal of the college Dr. S Suresh Babu, head of the department Dr Gouri Antherjanam, the function was inaugurated by esteemed chief guest Superintendent Engineer Johnson K. Distinguished guests, faculties and students of the department also attended the inaugural ceremony. The program commenced with prayer. The welcome speech was delivered by Dr Gouri Antherjanam and the presidential address by Dr Suresh Babu. This was followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the honorable chief guest and the dignitaries on and of the dais. The inaugural address was given by the chief guest and enlightened the importance of engineering in day to day life and motivated the students to do better in the future. The felicitation on the graceful occasion was delivered by Dr E K Bhass, PG Dean. The function was concluded with a vote of thanks by Jobin Boben.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by a technical talk by the respected chief guest on the “Recent trends in Civil Engineering”.










SAMSKRITHI 2018

The association of civil department “Castellos” had organized an exhibition “SAMSKRITHI” on 26th and 27th November 2018, as a part of Xplore-‘18 held in college. Main works were the floating house constructed on the punja in front of civil department, tree house, suspension bridge created at the entrance of department, art gallery, model of a rocket launching station and many more still and working models. Suspension bridge and tree house were constructed using the locally available bamboo.

All expo works were created by the students themselves. Students from various schools came to witness the expo. For them it was a very exciting and a different experience. Introducing and discussing technical related things seems very interesting. Floating house was the centre of attraction of the expo and got appreciations from all around the college. Also, the whole expo events were covered by the media.

World Habitat Day

IE(I) Students Chapter, Department of Civil Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering (SBCE), Pattoor, Alappuzha along with IE(I) Kollam Local Centre celebrated the world habitat day. In association with this program one day technical talk on “Solid Waste Management” was conducted by Mr Subhash Varma, Professor, Department of Architecture, TKM College, Kollam on 1 October 2018 at conference hall. 120 participants attended the function. Dr Gouri Antharjanam, HoD, Department of CE gave the welcome address on this occasion. She expressed the importance of observing The World Habitat Day. And also, she notified her expectation in young engineers and pioneers for the better future. The function was presided over by Dr S Suresh Babu, Principal, SBCE. In his presidential address he expressed his concern over the increasing amount of wastes in urban and rural area. He mentioned about the possibilities of ecofriendly construction and use of resources without depleting it. K K Sivadasan the college treasurer inaugurated the function. Prof Madhav K, IEl Coordinator, SBCE in his facilitation pointed out the role of Habitat Day by reminding us about the sources and amount of solid wastes.
Prof Pradeep P, Asst Professor,department of CE in his facilitation pointed that for the past 50 years environmental pollution was not much considered and now it became a fact which affect the human existence.

The function continued with a technical talk on “Solid Waste Management” by Mr Subhash Varma Professor Department of Architecture T K M College Kollam. In his talk he told about the importance and the way of eradication of solid waste which has heightened in Kerala after flood. He mentioned that waste is not waste but it’s another resource if we manage it well. He also said that as an initiative step micro level solid waste management should start from our homes. The UN agenda of this year is for World Habitat Day 1 October 2018 is Municipal Solid Waste Management.

A technical talk on “Necessity of Water Purification and its Controlled Usage” by Er Ajaykumar, Kerala Water Authority organised by Department of Civil Engineering, under “Prabhodhana” sponsored by KSCSTE under Science Popularization Programme on 18/09/2018 for school students.

SIX DAY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ON ”MODELLING OF COMPLEX PROBLEMS IN ANSYS SOFTWARE”

The Department of Civil Engineering, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor organized a six day Faculty Development Programme on “ Modelling of complex problems in ANSYS Software” scheduled from 16th to 21st July 2018. Dr E K Bhass, Head of the department, formally inaugurated the session. Dr Gouri Antherjanam, Professor, Departement of Civil, was the chief advisor of the programme. Ms Ritzy R, Assistant professor Department of civil coordinated the workshop. ANSYS workshop was a highly demanding training program considering its application in Research and Development (R & D) field. The problem solving in ANSYS require high skills and experience.
The resource persons were Dr Akash Rajan, Vibration Analyst CEO, Tyrannus Innovative Engineering & Research Academy (TIERA) CET-TBI College of Engineering Trivandrum and Dr Nivin Philip, Associate Professor,Mar Baselios Christian College of Engineering & Technology, Idukki. The resource persons highlighted the following key areas: Introduction to ANSYS APDL and Workbench, Basics of FEA (focus on statics): Node numbering, Connectivity , Writing the first APDL code, Load Step Vs Time Step, Non-linear analysis, Linear and Nonlinear buckling and Concrete modelling and crack studies. The worksop was highly beneficial to the researchers interested in exploring the capabilities of ANSYS software.


SHORT TERM TRAINING PROGRAMME ON ‘ADVANCES IN DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES’ held from May 21- 26th 2018   

       
A six day short term training programme was organized by Department of Civil Engineering, from 21-26th May 2018. The training program aimed at knowledge enhancement in the field of concrete structures for Faculty Members, Research scholars and PG students of civil engineering Stream from all engineering colleges. Professor Dr Gouri Antherjanam and Ms Regi P Mohan, Assistant Professor were the course coordinators. It mainly focused on Analysis and Design of Concrete Structures, Bridge construction, Construction challenges & Solutions, Durability of Concrete Structures, Sesismic design of RCC structures, Structural Health Monitoring and Retrofitting of existing RC structures etc. Eminent professors from National Institute of Technology Calicut and other state of the art institutions led the classes. The training programme was inaugurated on 21/5/2018 by Dr N Ganesan, Professor, National Institute of Technology Calicut, Chairman Prof K Sasikumar, Principal Dr S Suresh Babu, Treasurer Shri K K Sivadasan, Department Head Dr E K Bhass, other department HODs, Course Coordinators, faculties, PG scholars and external participants were present.
Dr N Ganesan took class on ‘Investigation of distress in RCC structures using NDT methods’ after the inauguration. He covered many field situations of distress occurred in RCC structures. Dr Lalu Mangal, Retd. Professor from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam handled session on ‘Problems in construction field and their solutions’ and explained about the challenges during the construction phases for many consultancy works and the remedial measures taken. Dr Narayanan S, former Professor, TKM college of Engineeering Kollam handled session on ‘Rehabilitation aspects of concrete structures’. Dr E V Nampoothiri, Retd professor from TKM College of Engineering and present HOD, Civil department SBCE Elavumthitta handled a session on ‘Rehabilitation of concrete structures’. Dr Nampoothiri detailed about the structural health monitoring, sensors and actuators, retrofit strategies adopted globally, concrete sustainability concerns – BEES approach, BEES methodology, LC Analysis of a building, Environmental impact assessment etc. Dr Dhanya BS, Associate Professor, department of civil Engineering, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam explained about all durability tests done on concrete according to codal provisions. Mr Anup Joy, Assistant Engineer, PWD roads section, Kozhenchery handled a session on ‘Challenges in Bridge construction’. Mr Anup Joy detailed about the planning stage, location study, fixing of foundation, piling, pile cap construction, pier construction, design and construction stages of bridges, curing and maintenance stages. Dr Abey E Thomas from College of Engineering, Aranmula handled session on ‘Seismic design and detailing of RCC buildings using IS 1893 and IS 13920’. He explained about Seismic design methods, Seismic damages in buildings, Importance of ductility in seismic design of RC structures etc. On the last day of training program, field visits were arranged to Enath Bridge site and to Vazhiyambalam bridge site, Karuvatta Veeyapuram road. About 15 faculty members and 40 M. Tech students attended the training programme. Sessions were highly beneficial for faculty and PG scholars for updating their knowledge level and to enhance their research interests in the field of advanced design of concrete structures.

ADVANCES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (ACE 2018)

The two day conference on Advances in Civil Engineering, conducted under the second annual conference series “E2F2” of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, highlighted the theme Sustainability in every aspects of Civil engineering. Eighty one papers were presented in the conference, from various engineering colleges in Kerala
The technical sessions of ACE 2018 conference are held on 17th and 18th April 2018. A total of 81 papers were presented and discussed in 8 technical sessions, two sessions on 17 April and six sessions on 18 April 2018. Each technical session is conducted by an expert panel consisting of an external subject expert as Session Chair and a faculty member of SBCE as Rapporteur. Each technical session started with an introductory speech by the Chair. For each paper, 15 minutes was allotted for oral presentation and 5 minutes for discussion. Technical sessions are conducted at two venues on 17 April2018. A total of 24 technical papers are presented and discussed in these sessions. On 18 April 2018, technical sessions are conducted at six parallel venues. A total of 57 technical papers are presented in these sessions. As per the decision of the Conference Committee, there was one paper selected for the award for best paper, and three papers selected for the award for second best paper. Ms Lakshmi Elizabeth Joseph, Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam received the best paper award. The second best paper award is shared by three participants; Ms Akhila V of NIT, Rourkela, Ms Shahana S of Mar Basalios college of Engineering and Technology, Trivandrum, and Ms Greeshma Subhash of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor.

ONE DAY SEMINAR ON DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Post Graduate students Interdisciplinary Forum (PGIF) of SBCE had coordinated a seminar on Disaster Management for P.G. students of Department of Civil Engineering on 08th August 2017 at Conference hall, library block. Mr Amal Raj M, assistant professor on Disaster Management from Institute of land and Disaster Management (ILDM, Government of Kerala) and Mr Arun G, first aid trainer and health inspector, Government of Kerala were the chief guests. M. Tech Structural engineering students attended the seminar. College Principal Dr. S Suresh Babu presided over the Inaugural ceremony. Mr. Amal Raj M. handled the technical session on Disaster Management Policies and Earth quake response. Disaster, its various aspects and the control policies adopted by government were detailed. He briefed on how ILDM is acting as a focal point at state level, for imparting training in the field of disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, relief, rehabilitation etc; undertaking research, documentation and development of database. This seminar was conducted aimed at providing awareness about various natural and manmade disasters and the immediate measures to survive them. Mr. Arun G. handled another technical session on Medical first response and Rescue Techniques. He detailed various first aids and rescue techniques adopted during accidents and disasters. Demonstrations were also shown on some rescue techniques.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP ON “APPLICATIONS OF ANSYS IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING PROBLEMS”

Workshop on “Applications of ANSYS in Structural Engineering Problems” was organized jointly by Department of Civil Engineering and Indian Concrete Institute Student Chapter, Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor during November – December, 2016. The workshop involved hands-on training on ANSYS software; a world renowned and widely accepted Finite Element Analysis package and comprised of two day basic level training conducted from 8th to 9th of November 2016 in which 51 M Tech students participated and advanced workshop conducted from 19th to 21st of December 2016 in which 30 aspirants participated including 23 external participants from various engineering colleges in Kerala.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON TOTAL STATION SURVEYING

A one day faculty development programme ‘Advanced surveying using total station’ was conducted on 24th July 2016 to train the faculty in Total station surveying. Ritzy R, Assistant Professor, Dept of civil was the resource person and trainer of the program. Inaugural session started by 9.00 am. Dr. E. V. Nampoothiri, U.G Dean delivered welcome speech The target group was faculty and lab staff of civil department. The participants gained practical experience in the key learning areas including basic key operations, recording data, distance measurement, angle measurement, coordinate measurement, surface area and traversing, data transfer, data interpretation and data plotting using total station.


NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY CELEBRATION 2016

National Technology Day is celebrated as a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry, technological creativity and the translation of that quest in the integration of Science, Society and Industry. This day is also celebrated to honour technological innovations and their successful commercialization which makes fruits of research reach people at large.
Sree Buddha College of Engineering, in association with Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) celebrated National Technological Day on 11 May 2016 at conference hall. KSCSTE funded the celebration. Prof. V. Prasad, Secretary, SBCE, Dr S Suresh Babu, Principal, SBCE & Dr E K Bhass, HoD Civil & Dean (PG) (Advisor) were present for the function. Mr C P Dinesh, Managing Director, FRBL and Mr Shyam Kumar, Managing Director, ENGEN Dealers and Consultants, Trivandrum were the invited guest for the celebration Dr E K Bhass, welcomed the gathering. He also mentioned on the need for advanced research in engineering colleges. Dr S Suresh Babu presided the function and delivered presidential address. Prof V Prasad felicitated the gathering. They stressed upon the importance of technological innovations in transforming India. Engineers should involve in technological developments by utilizing the potential resources available, without affecting nature. Mr C P Dinesh, Managing Director, FRBL inaugurated the celebration by lighting the lamp. Following, he delivered a technical talk on ‘Prefabricated GFRG panels for mass housing’. The session was informative and interactive. He envisaged a new dimension in cost effective housing methods. Mr Shyam Kumar, Managing Director, ENGEN Dealers and Consultants, Trivandrum delivered a talk on ‘Humanitarian Technologies’. He took the gathering to a new world of innovative ideas. He also stressed upon the need on start-ups.

UG students and PG scholars presented innovative project ideas such as Bamboo reinforced concrete, Bio-sand filter, Cost effective automatic dimmer for automobile headlight, pneumatically powered wheel chair–stretcher, Power generating slabs etc. Participants utilized the platform effectively.



SEMINAR ON GOOD CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES

A seminar on ‘Good construction practices’ was conducted by PGIF, Department of Civil Engineering, SBCE on 14th November 2016 at Civil department seminar hall. Er T P Madhusoodanan, chief consultant, Habitat technology group, Trivandrum was the chief guest.
Inaugural session started by 10.30 am. Dr E V Nampoothiri, UG Dean, delivered welcome speech. Principal Dr S Suresh Babu  delivered presidential address. Shri K K Sivadasan, Treasurer of Sree Buddha Educational Society and Dr E K Bhass, Head of Department of civil Engineering also addressed the audience. Er T P Madhusoodanan handled the technical session on Good Construction Practices. PG Scholars and fifth semester U G students of the department attended the seminar. He started the seminar by showing some photographs of structures hit by Tsunami at Srilanka, which were taken by him the very next day of the disaster. Thus he made the audience understand what all can happen if good construction practices were not followed. He stressed about the need for following good and sustainable construction practices. He gave a humanitarian dimension to engineering problems. Dr E K Bhass, made concluding remarks. Akhil A Nair, PG scholar then delivered vote of thanks.

SEMINAR ON “SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT”

A seminar on “Solid Waste Management” was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering on March 14, 2016 in association with Innovation Experience, Trivandrum in the conference hall (Library Block). A lecture on Innovative Methods in Solid Waste Management was taken by Shri Shyam Kumar, Director, Innovation Experience. The lecture also covered the various aspects of Design Engineering. The session was attended by the students of second, sixth & eigth semesters of Civil Engineering and was presided over by Dr E K Bhass (HoD (CE), PG Dean) & Shri K K Sivadasan (Treasurer, SBCE).

WORKSHOP ON ‘INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING’

Department of Civil Engineering, in association with Industry Consultancy Cell conducted practical workshop on ‘Introduction to Structural Engineering’ for Final year Civil engineering students of two different colleges. The workshop was conducted for students of College of Engineering, Pathanapuram on 02 March 2016 and for students of College of Engineering, Kidangur on 16,17 March 2016. The workshop includes lecture and demonstration of non-destructive tests on concrete, behaviour of buildings on dynamics loads and the load deflection characteristics of different types of beams. The demonstrations of experiments were performed at P.G Structural Lab and Concrete Lab, Civil Block. Prof. Anup Joy and Prof. Ritzy. R of Civil Department was the main coordinators of the programme. Students expressed positive feedback and their willingness to attend future programmes like this.

SEMINAR ON ” SOLID WASTE AND THE WARNING BELL!!!”

A Seminar on “Solid Waste and the Warning Bell!!!” was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering on Feb 25, 2016 in association with Alappuzha District office of Suchitwa Mission. The forenoon session of the seminar included a presentation by Kerala Suchitwa Mission on the hazardous effect of different types on solid waste on our environment, possible measures and government policies for its effective management, implemented projects etc. The afternoon session was dedicated for the demonstration of two innovative inventions for the management of biodegradable solid waste by Dr Sudharmaidevi and team, Scientist, Kerala Agricultural University and by Mr. Sumesh Isaac, Innovator and Entrepreneur (Alumni of Kerala Agricultural university)
College level prelims of the” Suchitwa Keralam Quiz 2016” were conducted by Department of Civil Engineering on Jan 14, 2016. This competition was conducted to spread the messages of “Suchitwa” among the students and to short list the participants for the state level quiz competition organized by Suchitwa Mission (Govt. of Kerala).

TWO DAYS WORKSHOP ON “CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT”

Two days workshop on “Construction Project Management” was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering in association with Civil Simplified for B Tech students on Feb 19 & 20, 2016. Civil Simplified is an IIT Kanpur alumni venture working with the intention of improving awareness about the latest trends in civil engineering and to bridge the gap between industry and academia. The workshop was organized with the vision of industry oriented skill development for the budding civil engineers. The workshop also included hands-on training on design software.

SEMINAR ON “BAMBOO TECHNOLOGY”

A seminar on Bamboo Technology was conducted by PGIF & Department of Civil Engineering, SBCE on 20 th January 2016 at Civil department seminar hall. Mr M Baburaj, one of the directors of URAVU organisation from Wayanad was the chief guest. About 100 PG students from various departments attended the seminar.
Seminar started at 9 am. After the welcome speech by Ms Regi P Mohan (PGIF coordinator, Department of CE) and address by Principal Dr S Suresh Babu, Mr M Baburaj addressed the audience. His seminar was on ‘Bamboo: as a green material’. He started on the species diversity of Bamboo, later moving on to different aspects of bamboo technology. He briefed on activities of URAVU to promote bamboo based products and on bamboo based construction. He also detailed the various methods of treatment adopted before using bamboo for construction, different methods of construction using bamboo etc. Dr E K Bhass, HoD CE and Dean of PG Studies made concluding remarks and vote of thanks was given by student representative from the department, Ms Divya S Dharan. By 12.15 pm the seminar came to end.

SEMINAR ON “SOFTWARE AWARENESS PROGRAMME”

A seminar on “Software awareness programme” was conducted under the Civil Engineering Association, CASTELLOS of Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor in association with CADD Centre Mavelikara on 12th January 2016 at CE Seminar Hall.
Mr. Suresh Kumar, the business manager of CADD centre began the session with the brief history of the CADD centre, their activities and courses offered. This was followed by a session by Mr. Prashanth G Krishnan, who introduced Building information modelling and a video presentation on the same showing its benefits over other normal software. Later on Ms. Aswathy, a faculty member of CADD centre introduced various other software including AUTOCAD, Primavera, Revit Architecture and 3Ds MAX. Finally the session came to an end with Mr Suresh giving the students a brief idea about the upcoming events like the CAD Quest, Job Fairs etc. The entire session was simply fruitful and eye opening.

TWO WEEK ISTE STTP ON “INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING”

A Two-week Faculty development program (ISTE STTP) on “Introduction to Structural Engineering” was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering, SBCE as part of T10KT mission of National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt of India) from Jan 4 – 9, 2016. 13 faculty members from different colleges participated in the short term training programme. The STTP covered topics such as Structural Analysis, Design of Concrete Structures, Design of Steel Structures and Special topics in concrete & steel structures. The participants effectively utilised the platform to improve their knowledge in Structural Engineering through A-view interaction, quiz and assignments.
